Hey Hey Swingstars!  Yep, we were supposed to be In Napier Art Deco Festival this week but sadly due to Cyclone Gabrielle devastating the North Island and much of our beloved Hawkes Bay region was flooded and destroyed.  We feel so deeply for them all.  Having attended so many of these festivals in this small town you get to know the locals and you see how much they put into this festival and also how much they rely on that weeks tourism.  They are in our prayers.  Ray and I and our travelling companions made the 11th hour call not to board the plane and turns out it was a wise decision.  So.. we are on a mini staycation.. lucky you.. you get another newsletter!

A little Story About Frankie

Mullum Swings – Friday 24 February 2024 – 7pm (NSW time) – $20 at the door

Rhydian Lewis has put together a stella line up for us this month at Swing On In’s Mullum Swings Social Dance.  I have danced to the tunes of Nikki Parrott (Pic below) and Dave and Steve and also Rhydian as you know and to have them all together will be such a dancers delight!  A treat for your feet, it will put a Hum indoor heart!  I kid you not!

Join us for our Monthly Swing Social Dance. A night to dance away the week, meet new friends, enjoy great company and listen to the best of swing music.
Each Month we will either have a band, a guest singer or DJ spinning the discs with all your favs to dance to..
This Monthly is hosted by the Dapper Rhydian Lewis and his swing band to delight all the Lindy hoppers in the Room.
7pm – 10pm NSW TIME – $20 at the door.
Restaurant and Bar open.

Masquerade Party – Saturday 25 February – Tweed Heads

How long since you’ve been to a masquerade Party?  Well I can’t even remember so when this event came up I looked at Ray and he covered his eyes so I took that as a yes and booked tickets!  A bunch of us are going to so you will heaps of friends/dancers!  Details HERE

Lismore Flood Recovery Anniversary Party – Saturday 4th March – REFLECT, REBUILD

Come and join the Swing On In Dancers as we collectively celebrate and reflect on the Lismore Floods.  So many of our own dancers were affected by this devastating event and we are so proud that we have been asked to be involved and participate in this fantastic day of joyful events including a Swing Dance performance by our troupe and dancing live the the delightful tunes of Rhydian Lewis and also Chris Knight doing his Buddy Holly Tribute Show.  I believe Elvis will be there too!  We can dance to any thing as you know but we ould LOVE for you to ALL come and join us.  We will be there from 1pm and we dance from 2 to 3pm.. and then we join in an play and enjoy and dance.. An open CBD Gathering on Saturday, 4 March with CBD businesses, food vendors, local artists, roving entertainers and four live music stages around the block which will be closed to traffic.

Next: “Ian of the Wild” will give a 15 min talk on the Big Scrub and they are doing with rainforest regeneration on the farm – Always interesting, engaging and informative when Ian of the Wild Speaks!
Next: We walk to the waterfalls through the rainforest and swim into the afternoon.
 
Next: Around 4pm – we head back to the secret venue for an afternoon of dancing. Dinner will be at 7pm and then more dancing!

What to bring:

Covered shoes for walking in rainforest,
Dancing shoes,
Whatever they want to drink during the day and evening.

A Great Gatsby Picnic and Swing Dance – Gold Coast

11.00am – 7.00pm – A Great Gatsby Picnic and Swing Dance
1st Location: It’s a Art Deco Inspired Gatsby Picnic.. A Jazz Aged Lawn Party if you like so…bring your white linen table cloths/picnic blankets, picnic baskets full of goodies, parasols and come dressed in your best deco outfits. You can go minimal or go the whole 9 yards! Tents, tables and a themed ensemble that will make everyone want to join your party!!
2nd Location: Swing Dance the afternoon away, let the sun set on a magnificent day of fun, frivolity and dance!

A HUGE THANK YOU to Maddie and David & Ian for taking our classes for us this week whilst we were on a holiday to NZ that did not happen but we had a staycation anyway!   They stepped up, planned and delivered our classes which when you don’t teach regularly, can be very daunting.  It’s tough to hold a room and engage everyone and teach students to learn and take away something magical.  We appreciate you and value your input!
Ray and I will be back this week for regular classes and look forward to your cheeky smiles and sighs of dismay at Rays awed Dad Jokes!  We have some cool improvs, stylings and Charleston for you this week!
7pm – start – we would love everyone to arrive early so we can start on time that would be awesome as we want to give you the full classes but the full social times dancing too!

New swing Dance Social in Brisbane

Sunday Swing Sesh with SWING PATROL BRISBANE – FB Event with all the details HERE

This is pitched as a really relaxed beginner-friendly dance where all and sundry are welcome.
The event will include a complimentary taster lesson at the start, great DJ’d music and a range of fun things during the session such as the Shim Sham, a snowball, a steal dance and even our famous Lovers Waltz. Basically, we want to have a laugh, ensure it’s an inclusive and fun event and that everyone has a great dance sesh.
Leigh Richards will be your host of the event and we look forward to welcoming you.
Schedule:
The doors open at 2.45pm, with a short complimentary taster lesson starting almost immediately. The lesson will assume no knowledge.
Once the lesson is over, the swing session will be open to all until till 6.20pm. – $15pp at the door.

A little Story about Frankie:

Frankie Manning’s hands and feet were huge!  He was so tall, so handsome and had a laugh that just made you wanted to laugh with him.  When dancing with Frankie, he was smiling all the time and he did this thing where if something felt good he would giggle and make noises and say Oh yeah.  It’s hard to describe but anyone who has heard Frankie tell a yarn or had the pleasure of dancing with him you can hear his voice as I write this I know!   I have this awesome article on Frankie and the front page is his big feet!  I took the article to Sydney once when I was at one of his workshops and asked him to sign it for me.  He looked at those feet and said, “They are some ugly feet!”  I said , no, they are the best dancing feet I ever saw!  He laughed and signed my article “Frankie Manning…. At Your Feet!”.  I Loved that moment!   (Of course My Mum was in the wings as she always was and took a photo of us all laughing when he said that! – See picture below.  Its hard to see his words but they are there)

 

Frankie ‘Muscle Head’ Manning was over 6 feet tall and I am only about 5ft4 inches.. Take a minute to look at this picture below and let’s put it into context.  This is late 90’s, Frankie is in his late 80’s and he was the original grand father of Lindy Hop…

We often talk about how Lindy Hoppers dance lower to the floor than other styles of dance. Ray and I always think we are dancing lower to the ground, we feel it but when we look back at ourselves dancing we are still quiet upright!
