Learn the Lindy Hop, Shim Sham, Balboa Dance and the St Louis Shag

The term ‘swing’ takes its name from the music of the big band era of jazz music in the 1920’s and 1930’s just prior to World War II. Swing dancing was the accompanying dance style that became popular and eventually took the United States by storm.

Not only was the music going through a transformation but many dance styles were also changing to suit the music. New swing dance variations emerged from early dance styles such as the Charleston era of the 1920’s. Dances like the Lindy Hop and Balboa which also had their roots in the early jazz times adapted well to the music that was played during the swinging days.

Since then swing dancing has become a worldwide popular and enduring dance form, even enjoying a revival in the late 1990’s. You can learn these simple and fun dance styles at our dance school which run weekly dance classes in Mullumbimby (NSW) and on the Gold Coast.

Come along and learn the moves for the Lindy Hop, the Shim Sham, the Balboa Dance and the St Louis Shag. Unlike some dance forms swing dancing allows the dancer to incorporate different styles and moves into their dancing making it a free style that can be danced solo or with a partner.

Along with weekly social swing dance classes, monthly social events our dance school also has its own swing dance entertainment troupe.

Thursday Nights: Mullum swing dance school classes

Our Mullumbimby classes are held at The Ex Services mans Club, 58 Dalley St, Mullumbimby (NSW) every Thursday evening.

    • 6.30pm – 7:15pm Beginners **New Beginners MUST complete 4 consecutive weeks before moving into Transition Class**
    • 7:30pm – 8:05pm Social Practice
    • 8:05pm – 8:35pm Transition **New Transitions MUST complete 4 consecutive weeks before moving into Intermediate/Advanced Class**
    • 8:35pm – 9:00pm Social Practice
    • 9:00pm – 9:45pm Intermediate/Advanced
    • Social Dance to Close at 10.00pm
