Are we ready to get back to dancing?

Howdy friends…

It’s nearly February, can you believe it!.  Ray and I have had a real blast doing very little and resting, rejuvenating and planning for 2023 and all the excitement that’s bringing yours/our way!

YOU!… you are the Swing dance community!  OUR job (aside from teaching you the greatest dance in the world – Lindy Hop) is to create a Swing Dance Community and I have to say, I think last year we nailed it because I watch all of you gather and go to workshops, outings, house parties, swing gigs and social catch ups..  with AND without us.. you have fostered beautiful friendships that will be lifelong.  You have stepped outside of the Swing On In comfort zone and got out to dance, experience, enjoy and explore this great dance, the wider community and all the fun that comes with that!!  Some of you ventured abroad on Swing Dance Cruises across the seas, some travelled to exchanges and some just made a decision to get out and dance more with other people and WE could not be more bloody proud!

As swing dance parents we do tend to become close and protective of our swing dance flock and we don’t always want to let you go but over 26 years we know that we can’t keep everyone and have learnt to push you so you can fly the coup and experience the Lindy Hop world farther afield.. YOU are always welcome back and we are also happy if you never leave but all in all, when we check in with ourselves and ask the questions (as we do each year) WHY? are we still here, still doing this?  and the answer is YOU!  You are the Swing Dance Community and we need you too!

So.. after that soulful piece (I bet the boys all tuned out after 10 seconds! Ha!  Whats in this newsletter:

Cancelled Workshop

We always thought it might be a risk trying to hold a Workshop in Late January..  but we thought we’d try.. It didn’t happen and we had to cancel, but that’s OK, we can definitely reschedule later on in the year!!  SO… Just so we are all clear, there is NO workshop on Sunday 29th of January with Gentle Man James in Mullumbimby..  Our Swingouts and Sugar Pushes workshop will be coming down the line a bit later!

Ballina RSL Social Dancing – Sunday Sessions

Through the rest of January and February, the Ballina RSL is putting on Blues and Swing Bands for free from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.  Ray and I plan to get there soon but from all the feedback these are great Sunday Dance sessions.  Here’s the link, get along and enjoy a Sunday wind down dance! Lismore Event

  • Swing On In have been asked to be involved in this most fantastic event to REFLECT/REBUILD LISMORE celebration of 1 year on from the most catastrophic flood event in 2022.

A day of food and entertainment in the Lismore CBD.

The CBD gathering will allow the community to come together and reconnect.

Live music stages will be located on Keen Street, Woodlark Street, Molesworth Street and Magellan Street. Each street will have its own musical theme, including Country, Cultural, Swing, Rock and Roll and Youth.

The Swing On In Dancers will be performing and The Lindy Charm School will be offering free vintage hair to the general public.  It’s going to be heartfelt, and fun! There are some fantastic musicians (which you know and love) on the stage to entertain us all afternoon!  (I can’t tell you yet but they are RAD!!)

DATE: Saturday 4th March, 2023
TIME: 2:00 pm 8:00 pm We are on about 2pm I think…
WHY: To commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the Catastrophic Natural Disaster – 2022 Flooding events.
WHAT: We are shutting down the Lismore CBD and activating 4 stages plus including roving entertainment, food trucks, workshops, kids zones, etc and finishing up with a laser show or fireworks. The event is FREE and being run by Lismore City Council to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the floods.
