Happy New Year Swing On In Family, Friends and Dance Community!

Here we are, embracing the twilight of 2023 and  the boundless possibilities that 2024 holds. Did you know that adding up 2+0+2+4 equals 8, a lucky number? Let’s make this year the most prosperous, peaceful, and joyful one yet. That’s the mindset I’m setting for myself in this new resolution.

Before we fully dive into the adventures of 2024, let’s take a moment to reflect on the highlights of 2023. From the Classics by the Coast in Yeppoon to touring with CW Stoneking and the team of Everybody Now out to Charleville performing for Qld Music Trails then The, DJing and styling at Chromefest at The Entrance NSW to name a few.. what a journey it has been!  We could not run away and play now and then if it weren’t for these kids:  A heartfelt thank you to our incredible students, the backbone of Swing On In, Deryn, Ian, Renae, Pete, Dan & Paul, Charlotte and Kerrie, Gabrielle and Michael... your willingness to step up and take our classes allowed us to explore new opportunities stress-free. Your dedication is truly appreciated.  Also to our vibrant communities on the Gold Coast and Mullumbimby, you are the fabric of Swing On In.  Your energy each week makes our dance family special. Let’s continue this in 2024.

As promised, here are our Summer Swing Dance workshops starting on January 7th at our Gold Coast studio. Limited spots available, so be the first on the dance floor to secure your spot!

10 – 12.00 Noon – Jump in the Jam Circle.  We will help choreo a 8 x 8 mini pattern for you to perform in a Jam Circle ($40pp)

12.30 – 2.30pm – 2 x solo Jazz Routines – Paolo Nutini & Shim Sham ($40 pp)

Full Day $60pp

Sunday 21 January 2024

10 – 11 – Soft Shoe Shuffle/Tap solo routine for beginners ($20pp)

11.30pm – 1.00pm – 1960’s Bob Fosse Broadway Routine “The Frug” ($30pp) – A great way to understand and control your own body movement, its a fun, jazzy cabaret number suitable for ALL genders..  

2pm – 3.30pm – Iconic Solo Jazz Routine – The Charleston Stroil – ($30pp)

Full Day -$60pp

Sunday 28 January 2024

10am – 12 Noon – The Iconic California Routine -($40pp) – Must hav your own dance partner for this one.

1 – 2.30pm – Iconic Solo Jazz Routine Mama Stew – $30pp

What is a Lindy Exchange an some dates and links you might like:

Exchanges are basically a weekend of almost non-stop dancing thrown by one city for all of the lindy hoppers in the world. Dancers go to these and dance all hours of the day and night, and then wake up and dance some more. Whew! Most times exchange are purely social dancing but some exchanges opt to throw in a workshop of two.

Exchanges are a great way to experience the styles of scenes and to meet dancers across the world.

Down Memory Lane:

Here is video clips of Ray and I in circa 1996/7 performing and teaching dance workshops for a rock n roll club in Brisbane.  We were so green, so young, so thin!  Notice how slippery that floor was!

 

Here’s a clip of our original Swing Dance troupe Swing Obsession which we were part of the Inaugural Annul Dance Affair in 2015 with Everybody Now.  This routine was choreographed and taught to us by Glenn and Rachel performing with us on the right along with , Swinging Jimmy & Karis, Inga and Alex and Fiona and Scott.  I had just finished chemo and radiation a week before and I was under 50 kg here and this performance near killed mw but I was so proud that I made it through and I the the whole troupe for carrying me at this time.

 

Fast Forward to our Current Dance Troupe preforming a slightly different version of the same routine at Cooly Rocks On with good friends, Scott & Arrienne as well.
